Karur: Nineteen DMK members, including DMK councillors, who were taken into custody for the assault on income tax officials during a raid on locations linked to Minister Senthil Balaji in Karur, have been granted conditional bail by the court.
Senthil Balaji serves as the Minister of Tamil Nadu Electricity and Prohibition in Chief Minister Stalin’s cabinet. In response to this incident, the Income Tax Department has been conducting extensive raids at places associated with him since the 26th of last month.
These investigations commenced in Chennai, Coimbatore, and Karur districts, with some locations being searched today. Simultaneously, over 40 places in Tamil Nadu were subjected to scrutiny, leading to widespread anticipation.
When Income Tax Department officials arrived in Karur for the raid on the 26th, the DMK vehemently protested and engaged in a confrontation with them. They even vandalized a vehicle and injured four officers in the process, causing significant uproar.
Subsequently, the injured officers received medical treatment and were subsequently discharged from the hospital. The Karur police registered a case based on the complaint filed by the Income Tax Department and conducted a thorough investigation, leading to the arrest of 19 individuals.
Among the arrested individuals are Bhupesh, Shahjahan, Sivaprakasam, Chinnaswamy, Arumugam, Tamilchelvan, Rajini Siva, Lawrence (Karur Corporation 20th Ward Councilor), Regan (Lawrence’s brother), Bhupathi (16th Ward Councilor), DMK Karur Municipal Corporation Northern Youth Deputy Organizer, and the Mayor’s cousin.
All of them were remanded to judicial custody. However, the 19 arrested individuals filed a bail petition with the Karur District Mahila Court. Today, the court reviewed the petition and granted conditional bail to all 19 people.
